In the heart of Harlow, a beacon of positivity shines brightly, dedicated to helping those struggling with trauma and life challenges. Paul Keates, a certified life coach specializing in trauma recovery, with an Evolve accredited Elite life coach, level 5 (IAPC&M certified) qualification. Empowering individuals to unlock their full potential through his business, The Edge Life Coaching. Combining his extensive training and personal experiences, Paul has become a guiding light for many.

Paul’s journey is one of resilience and triumph. He has faced and overcome a series of serious and life-threatening events. Paul experienced a fall and required surgery for a subdural Haematoma, later he was admittedĀ again for a further operation two months later for a clipping of an aneurysmĀ which then resulted in a stroke, leaving him paralyzed on one side. His recovery was extensive, but his determination never wavered. In 2020, Paul faced another challenge when he contracted severe COVID-19 and was admitted to intensive care at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Reflecting on his journey, Paul shared:

ā€œI know first-hand how life can change in an instant. Through every setback, I refused to let my circumstances define me. I committed myself to recovery, pushing through physical pain, mental exhaustion, and emotional battles. I went from being unable to walk to climbing mountains, running marathons, completing triathlons, and rebuilding my life from the ground up. Now, I want to help others do the same.ā€

Drawing from his life experiences and professional training, Paul now works with survivors of stroke, brain injury, surgery, and serious illness, as well as those who feel stuck, struggling, or searching for hope. He has developed a personalized coaching program built around six key stages of recovery: Shock, Denial, Anger, Anxiety/Depression, Acceptance, and Action. Using proven strategies, Paul helps people move forward with confidence and purpose. His one-on-one sessions are tailored to individual needs and experiences, reflecting his adaptable and empathetic approach. Paul’s techniques can also incorporate NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) therapy, Hypnosis, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy depending on the client’s needs. When asked why life coaching is important, Paul explained:

ā€œPeople often don’t like asking for help, and recovery isn’t easy or guaranteed, but it is possible to make improvements. I’m here to guide others, step by step, through the darkness and into the light—to help them rediscover their strength, reclaim their life, and realize just how far they can go. I’ve been on the edge myself, and it’s not a nice place mentally. I want to help others come back from the edge.ā€

Paul’s personal journey has been supported by various groups in Harlow, including MIND and the Harlow Stroke Support Rehab Centre, which helped him overcome his own challenges. Through his development and interactions with others facing similar struggles, Paul has come to appreciate the importance of support and community. Having someone to listen, chat, share stories, and look ahead to the future can be invaluable.
